This past Saturday the Golden Tornado Wrestling
Team traveled to Clearfield High School for the twelve team
Clearfield Duals. Butler won their pool by going
4 wins and 0 losses. Butler defeated District 10
Greenville 41-24, Port Allegany 54-15, and Curwensville 75-6 which set up a
semi-final with General McClane. General
McClane entered the tournament ranked #25 in the state. Butler easily disposed of the Lancers 44-21
which sent Butler to the final against
District 9 Champion Clearfield. Clearfield won the tournament the
past two seasons. The Bison matmen
looked poised to add their third title in as many years by jumping out to a
commanding 21-6 lead over the Golden Tornado through the first 6 weight
classes. Butler came roaring back and picked
up wins in seven of the final eight weight classes. Dillon Weston started the scoring by claiming
a decision victory. Eric Tuck, Dakoda
Collins, Matt Pribis, Cole Baxter and Robert Punchur followed with wins of
their own, before Butler was pinned at 215
pounds.
With Butler leading 30-27 the
Tornado sent out first year heavyweight Adam Steiner. Steiner needed to not give up the fall to
finish the comeback and earn the team title for Butler. Steiner did better than that by recording a
3-0 decision victory. Butler’s dual meet record is
now 22 wins and 2 losses on the season.
The
Golden Tornado will host the WPIAL Section 3 Team Dual Championships this
Wednesday at Butler Senior High Gym. At
6:00 p.m. Butler will wrestle Hopewell on Mat 1, while North
Allegheny will wrestle Hampton on mat 2. At eight o’clock the winners of that first
round will meet for the section
title
while the losing teams will wrestle for the third
place position.
